Comments from Crathie
I spoke to Archie Hay the Ghillie at Crathie this morning to catch up on how things are going at one of the most popular and scenic beats on the River Dee. Archie advised that a visiting angler Mr James Willimas hooked and landed a 25 lb coloured cock fish on a size 12 Munro Killer. They had a couple of inches rise in river levels which stirred the fish up a bit and the water temp had dropped to 48 degrees Fahrenheit. Its been a cold night and today the water temperature is only 43 degrees.
He was also happy to report that they caught 2 silver grilse last week which showed how determined these fish were to run to the upper part of the catchment. He advised that Charlotte Stone, Niece of Crathie Fly Legend Tom Saville, hooked and landed a 25 lb salmon last week on a red Frances. This is Archies last week on the river this week as he’s on the hill next week. John Lewis will take over the reins for the last week of the season. Archie advised that the temperatures have fallen and the Stags are now roaring on the hill at night.
