Beautiful banks at Birkhall

Lovely imageS sent in by angler Charles Jeffery who advised ‘ Just back from three days on Birkhall. The water was up and down like a fiddler’s elbow, but managed a wee 6lb fish from the Polvier on Monday.
The scenery was terrific and catching fish was almost secondary.(Almost).’

Location

Upper Dee, between Crathie and Ballater

Summary

Five year average: 31 salmon/grilse 3 miles right bank fishing, 15 pools Maximum rods 2 1 ghillie, 2 huts Price range: £40 to £92 per rod/day +vat

Description

Birkhall is a lightly fished two rod beat on a magnificent stretch of the River Dee on Balmoral Estates. The beat is fished from the right bank from April until July each year, unless required by the Royal Family.

There are 15 pools on the three mile beat and the services of a ghillie are shared between the two rods on the beat. There are classic fly-fishing pools and due to the fast flowing nature of the River Dee and the variety of pools, the beat can be fished at all water heights. The fishing experience is enhanced by the breathtaking scenery.

The beat is normally let on a weekly basis but during some periods it may be possible to rent on a part- week basis.

Self-catering cottages are often available under separate arrangements through the Balmoral Estates Office.
